Jeffrey Winter Fine Arts is a fine art gallery on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, CA, now operating in a shared space with Papillon Gallery.  JWFA was founded in 2004 as a private and wholesale gallery working in close cooperation with Papillon Gallery.  Over the last five years the gallery has exhibited alone and with Papillon at numerous art and antique shows around the country, including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Chicago, Miami Beach, Palm Beach, Santa Fe, San Francisco and Los Angeles.   After a year of operating at separate addresses from mid 2009-2010, the two galleries are in the same space again. .  Please check the events page for details on future happenings.

The gallery deals in a wide variety of modern and contemporary paintings and sculpture. Emphasis is primarily on figurative works from 1920-1940, however abstract and other subjects as well as some contemporary works are also included. Generally speaking, the galleries deal in works by “lesser known” artists.  In so doing we believe we offer higher quality art at better prices than many other galleries.  We would rather have a 1st tier piece by a lesser known artist than a sub-par piece by a “major” artist.  People often comment when they see us at a show or in the gallery “I’m surprised I’ve never heard of this artist before!”  We take this as a great compliment, what our visitors are telling us is that they think the art is so good that they, knowledgeable art lovers they are, should have heard of the artists before.  What happens next can be very telling. Some people, seeing a painting or sculpture that they just love at a reasonable price, will buy it.  Alternatively, they may go home to research the artists they have seen, only to discover there is little information out there, and much of it provided by us.  Or they will become lost in auction records, without any expertise in evaluating auction records or any intention of ever buying anything at auction.  Some may then forget the lesson of the encounter, that they were drawn to the art by the quality and seemingly reasonable price, and not by marketing hype or a promise that “it will go up in value”.   (“it will go up in value” is what everybody wants to hear, the more intently we wish to hear it, the less carefully we examine the deal at hand. ) It would make more sense to try to satisfy oneself that the quality and value at the offered price are there in the first place, rather than looking greedily toward  an unknowable future.  These types of people sometimes come back, haunted by an image they can’t get out of their heads, only to find the piece SOLD.

In order to satisfy concerns about value, we offer a very simple guarantee: any painting purchased at JWFA (or Papillon can be traded back against another painting of equal or greater value at any time for full credit.  If you lose confidence in the value of your painting, come trade it in and pick out another one.  If you decide you don’t like your painting, come trade it in and pick out another one.

Prices are not posted on the website, please email with pricing questions.  The website also resolves as www.jwfa.us. A password protected version that includes  prices is planned for the future. If you are a subscriber to Apple’s MobileMe service and have an iPhone, try downloading the MobileMe gallery app and then add refyjef as your friend for a truly cutting edge interface to this website.  If you don’t have an iPhone, you can still check out the MobileMe version of the site here (opens in a separate window).

We do not appraise or authenticate paintings, unless they were sold by us.  We accept consignments and welcome inquiries regarding artist estates.  Email submissions from working artists are also welcome, however JWFA is not primarily a contemporary gallery,  a response should not be expected.
