Étienne Bouchaud

Étienne Bouchaud was born on February 15, 1898 in Nantes. He was a student at the Académie Julian and the Académie Ranson, studying under Maurice Denis and Othon Friesz. He worked as a painter, decorative artist, and illustrator and exhibited his at collective exhibitions including the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, most memorably in 1923, the Salon d’Automne from 1924 onwards, and the Salon des Tuileries until 1942. He painted landscapes, African scenes, views of Montmartre and religious subjects and also worked on the wall decorations at the Colonial Exhibition of 1931. He also provided etchings for several books, including Rue Pigalle by Francis Carco.
Bouchaud belonged to the School of Algiers; In 2003, his work appeared in the exhibition Les Peintres de L’Autre Rive, Alger 1830-1930 (Painters from the Other Shore, Algiers 1830-1930) at the Musée de la Castre in Cannes as part of an event entitled “Djezireh: A Year of Algeria in France.”
He was also represented at the 2003 collective exhibition L’école d’Alger at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux.
Bouchaud died in Paris in 1989. His work had sold at auctions in Paris dating back to 1942.
